Don't Skip Meals!

I see this quite often in my coaching practice.
 
It’s common for people to think that when they skip a meal, they are ‘saving’ calories.   What happens though is it backfires! By mid-afternoon or early evening, they’re starving, and then they feel like they have no ‘will power.’  Our body needs fuel in the form of food to function, so when it’s deprived, it screams out for what it needs – food!  Willpower is no match, and then you end up feeling guilty.  Skipping meals sets you up for failure and feeling guilty.

Eat 3 meals a day and healthy snacks when needed. Or better yet have 6 small meals throughout the day! You’ll notice you get through the day with more energy, and when you plan your meals out during the day, you can make healthier choices.  It’s much easier to make unhealthy choices when you need to eat something now, and you just grab the closest thing you can find.

Plan ahead and be sure not to skip meals and you’re sure to notice a difference in how you feel and will usually end up eating fewer calories during the day.

Here are some tips to help you to stop skipping meals:
  1. Stock your pantry (keep staples stocked to take out guesswork of making meals)
  2. Carry snacks with you (keep healthy snacks at the office and in the car)
  3. Create menus (know what you're eating ahead of time)
  4. Keep recipes simple
  5. Shop in the frozen aisle (you'll always have veggies and fruits that can be used quickly without worrying about them spoiling too quick)

Make More Meals at Home


When you cook more meals at home, not only do you tend to eat healthier, but you can also save time, money and calories. 
  • If you cook a meal and make a double or triple batch, you’ll have left overs for lunches or another dinner.   By cooking once and eating two or three times, you are being extremely efficient with your time, money and calories.   
  • It’s much easier to eat healthy when you’re the one selecting the ingredients and preparing the meals. I know it takes more time to plan and prepare yourself, but if you are looking to lose or maintain weight, feel better and save money, it’s definitely worth the effort. 
  • On the nights that I know we have other activities going on with the kids, the crockpot is a HUGE help! 
  • Keep it simple!
  • Plan ahead! See what you have and work with it, when you know what you are having for each meal ahead, there is not time wasted in figuring it out on that day!

·      Deelish.com
·      FoodOnTheTable.com
·      eMeals.com (this is a paid service that sends you 5 recipes each week based on the dietary style you choose)

If life is just way too hectic, you can use services like Dream Dinners or Super Suppers where you go to their location and assemble your meals. You bring the assembled meals home and freeze them and use as needed. You’ll spend 30-60 minutes at their studio and can make enough meals for a week or a month AND no clean up.  This option is super convenient! 

Also there a now services like Blue Apron and Plated that will send you fresh ingredients to make your meals at home... This could work if you know you won't have time to plan for a couple of days a week.

Affirmation Monday! Being Patient with Yourself

If you have goals you are trying to reach, sometimes it can be difficult to have patience with yourself. Most often we are hardest on ourselves and do not allow the proper time for goals to become a reality (this often ends up leading to giving up or giving in because we think we should be further along with something than we are.)

If you are working towards a goal that you know is a part of the journey God has for you, then having patience with yourself on the journey is a must (also it shows that we are trusting God and trusting His timing, which always is better than our own.)

Kitchen Hacks to Save You Time



Hey Friends! 

Do you ever feel like cooking meals at home is a part-time job?  (Let’s be honest, it can feel like a full-time job!)  With all of the deciding on meals, shopping, cutting, chopping, clean up…just the thought of it can be so daunting.  

Being overwhelmed with cooking at home is also the main reason we zip through a drive-thru or order take-out, which is undoubtedly the least healthy option. 

Well, I’m here to let you in on a few of my favorite time saving tricks to use in the kitchen so you can enjoy your healthy meals at home.

A few kitchen hacks to save you time and sanity...
  • Chopping veggies can be a major time-sucker.  Save a slew of time by purchasing your veggies pre-chopped in the produce section at your grocery store — and an even smarter trick, load up on your pre-chopped veggies on the salad bar.  Many grocery stores have a salad bar that is priced per pound, and loading up a box of pre-cut veggies from the salad bar can cut down on waste and time. (Or set aside time to cut your veggies all at once)
  • Plan your meals for the week ahead of time.  Each weekend, take a look at what you have in your kitchen to create a plan of your meals for the week.  You can then make your shopping list based on what you’ll need for the week, which will cut down on mindless browsing (and buying) at the store.  (We’ve all been there, right?)  There are some amazing websites to help you out in this department -- a few options being plantoeat.com, meals.com and thefresh20.com.
  •  Cook in bulk.  This is beneficial for several reasons.  For example, roasting a big pan of veggies to use with meals during the week saves loads of time, and also allows you to use the ingredients in different ways.  A large pan of roasted veggies could be your side item for one meal, the veggies could be thrown atop a plate of zucchini noodles for pasta the next meal, veggie soup, etc.  Cook once, use many times.  It's a huge time-saver!  


Another smart trick is to clean up your workspace as you go.  After you’ve sat down and enjoyed a meal, the last thing you want to do is spend time working in the kitchen again.  As much as you can, clean up as you’re cooking, and leave the remaining clean up to be for the plates and utensils you eat with.  Easy, peasy.

Affirmation Monday: Balance!


To have balance in our lives is to have things in order. It is not always easily accomplished but the more we speak things into our lives that are what we want and desire, the more real they become.

The Bible tells us to use our tongues for life and not death; this means to speak positively about ourselves and the situations in our lives. Being negative brings negativity! So today our affirmations will help us to get our minds on having balance in our lives!


Remember to answer the questions below as well (write the answers in a notebook or journal!)
  1. One of my top priorities is a balanced life.
  2. I thrive when there is balance in my life. When all aspects of my life are given their fair share of attention, I feel like a complete person. 
  3. My spiritual life is important to me. When I give regular attention to my time with the Lord in prayer and Bible study, I find it easier to make it through the challenges of each day. I realize that my inner strength is lessened if I neglect my walk with the Lord.
  4. My physical well-being is critical because it ensures that both my body and mind can work at their peak performance. 
  5. When I am in shape physically, I feel energized and my thoughts are clearer and more organized. I make better decisions when my body is in a healthy state.
  6. I commit to making time for both work and enjoyment so one can balance out the other. I take pride in the feeling of accomplishment I get when I excel at my job. 
  7. I allow myself enough time to relax and rejuvenate. Reducing my stress lets me be at my best.
  8. Today, I strive to pay close attention to the signals in my life. I commit to heeding those signals and acting accordingly so I continue to maintain a balanced life. I know I am more effective in each facet of life when all aspects are given their due share of attention.

Dear Big Brother,

I have so much to tell you, so many things to share with you. I wish you were here to confide in, to share with and to fill you in on all the amazing things that are happening, all of the stressful things going on and to hear your voice speaking back to me.

It's been almost two years since I have heard your voice, and I miss it. Those words can't even describe how much it hurts when I think still that I won't hear it again, I won't hear you tell awful jokes, your laugh and your advice (even the stuff I don't agree with.) I would rather have another argument or disagreement with you than think about never hearing your voice again.

Teaching Our Children Well

As a mom to a 16 year old young man, with another baby on the way (set to appear in June, with no other children in between) I am finding myself wondering how this second time around will be different. I mean, I am 17 years older than I was the first time I was pregnant. With such a big gap, the difference in myself as a person between then and now is huge!

The first time around I was still a child myself and in many ways I feel like my son and I have grown up together. I am a completely different person now than I was then. I have some difficulty with almost feeling guilty that I will be doing things differently this time around...

Wellness Wednesday: Homemade Deodorant

Hello Happy People!

So I made a deal with myself to start making more home and healthcare products from scratch. As the arrival of Baby T gets closer and closer I am also paying more and more attention to the toxic environment we all have around us!

I decided as I ran out of health and beauty products to at least try making my own before running out to buy some more store bought products.

My deodorant ran out, and because life is, well... life, I hadn't gotten around to making my own (if you were around me at all the last couple of weeks I probably smelled a little more like old spice than dove, as I was using my husbands deodorant, because I vowed to NOT buy store bought until I tried my own first.)

FINALLY! I got around to making my own deodorant and so far, so good.

Over the years God has really been working on this inside of me. I have recognized my need for people, and for different kinds of people. I usually would prefer to work alone on a project, get it done (my way) and rarely did I ever really let anyone know what was going on down deep inside of me.

In 1 Corinthians  9:29 (ESV) it says, "But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself be disqualified."

Your self-discipline is a huge factor in the amount of success you achieve and how far you can go with the Lord. Growing up spiritually, accomplishing big goals often requires doing things we don’t enjoy. Discipline is basically the ability to get yourself to do things you don’t really feel like doing, making the desired outcome, goal, or level more important than the discomfort your flesh will feel in the process of the journey.

Everyone lacks the necessary discipline at times. It is work to get to where we are trying to get with God. We can’t always get ourselves to do the things that we know we should be doing. Then we feel bad about it. Then we beat ourselves up and feel even worse. Don’t let this happen to you! Usually, you won’t feel so bad if you can generally get a handle on your discipline.

A 5 Minute Guide to Healthy Meal Planning

Life is busy! Taking care of what you put in your mouth may be the last thing you’re thinking about! That D and D stop and bucket of KFC is way easier than planning ahead right?!?!

If you think meal planning takes too much time… I am going to have to tell you that it really doesn’t! Actually taking a little time to meal plan in advance can be so helpful, less stressful, less expensive and better for your overall health too…

Sound worth it?

Follow these tips for some easy, healthy meal planning!

The How To’s of Meal Planning

1.     Work one week at a time. When you do this you can give your personal chef the some time off (HA!), but it is much easier to plan for several days rather than a whole month. It allows you fewer trips to the grocery store and you can cook several meals at ones, which allows for leftovers too!

2.     Portion it out in advance. If you’re trying to work on overeating this step is helpful. You’ll know ahead how much you should be eating. (When I am finished cooking a batch meal, I portion out the lunches for the following day, that way they are finished the night before, as I am cleaning up… one less step!)

3.     Be mindful when you shop. Shop on the perimeter of the store; it will help you to stick with the whole, fresh foods rather than the snacky, sneaky, processed stuff. If you look around you may even be able to find a farmer’s market in your area. It will help you to buy local, healthy produce and support local businesses as well!

4.     Make a pantry list. Check out pinterest if this is a time consuming idea to you. Print out a pantry checklist and keep it up to date (I have mine laminated so I can cross things off when I run out and erase the line when I have re-purchased.) Or make your own list of things you want to always have at your fingertips.

5.     Clear out the junk food clutter! Read labels and get rid of junk to make room for more healthy foods. Get rid of things high in sugar, chemicals and anything that liusts too many ingredients. If you want some snacks around, that’s ok but just don’t keep them in plain sight (out of sight, out of mind!)

6.     Make it a family affair. There can never be too many helpers (many hands make light work!) Having your kids be a part of the process is an invaluable lesson for them and can greatly help you in the long run! Even small kids can help come up with side dish ideas and can also pitch in with easier tasks like helping clean up or making a salad (kids are more likely to eat something they have participated in creating as well!

7.     It’s ok to mess up! I can guarantee it’ll take a little time to come up with your perfect habits of meal planning and even then, things come up, life happens and it may not go as planned, but the more you stick to the easier it gets, the healthier you, your family and your wallet will be! Do not despise small beginnings!

A Few More Tips to Think About

1.     Load up on produce. Fill at least half your plate with vegetables and fruits. Aim for 5 to 13 servings a day. Most fresh or frozen produce is high in nutrients and low in calories.

2.     Choose good fats. Most adults need about 30% of their calories from fat. Good choices include olive oil, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish. (Love some avocado too!)

3.     Make it healthier. A quick Google search can help you to make wiser decisions (especially with your most loved recipes that do not lend themselves to a healthy lifestyle.)

4.     Carry healthy snacks. You need to incorporate healthy snacks into your meal plan… Cut up an apple and have a jar of almond butter at the office, have a small cooler with some Greek yogurt and some berries ready to go when hunger strikes!

5.     Read, read and read some more. If a food has more than 5 ingredients and you can’t pronounce half of them… steer clear! Do not focus on calories focus on content. Make sure things like sugar and sodium are low on the list of ingredients (ingredient list are written greatest amount to least amount.)

Whether you cook all the time or you burn cereal, you can incorporate new ways into you life to be more healthy happy and prepared in the kitchen.

Affirmation Monday: Fear!

Affirmation Monday!

Have you dealt with fear in your life? I have!!! 

Let me tell you a story, I used to be afraid of the phone.... really! For those of you who know me personally, you know that for the last 7 1/2 years I was the Director of US Retail for an international company. This means that I had to talk to people on the phone, all day! 

Also for those who don't know me, you may not know that I was a Radio DJ for a little while as well. That job required me to take through a microphone to a lot of people! Also I needed to talk to people on the phone, over the live radio airwaves!

It took me a long time to get over the fear of using the phone. But I want to tell you how bad this fear was. I moved to California after my son was born (16 years ago) and was on a military base, without my family or friends...

My fear of the phone was so great that I actually had to have my mother call from Rhode Island (my home state) to the pizza place (in California!) to order me pizza delivery (this went for Chinese food too!) YES!!! It sounds crazy but it was a legitimate fear that I had to break.

Once again we can look to the Scriptures to see what it says about FEAR and COURAGE... 
  • Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you. 
  • Psalm 27:1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?
  • Psalm 56:3-4 When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?
  • Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

If you are dealing with fear in your life (it may not be as unusual as mine, but it may be even deeper) use these affirmations and the above scriptures this week to help you to start breaking down that fear... it doe not have to control you! (And don't forget to answer the self-reflecting questions below)
  • My faith in God and my courage defines me.
  • My life is an example of Jesus and His bravery. My decisions reflect the fact that I am brave and capable. However, I also recognize when it is wise to be cautious.
  • I consider the long-term impact of my decisions and act boldly. I feel a sense of responsibility to fully utilize my capabilities.
  • I welcome moments of fear because I see it as a chance to stretch myself and expand my courageousness as I overcome it. Fear is an opportunity to trust God, but does not come from God.
  • When I am in new situations and feel uncertain, I can feel the Holy Spirit swelling courage within me. I can act with certainty and comfort.
  • Each time I do something new, I am pleasantly surprised by how capable I am, because Christ dwells within me.
  • New experiences provide opportunities to exercise and strengthen my courage, and I welcome them. Such experiences grow and enhance my other skills as well. Others recognize my many capabilities and quietly admire them.
  • When I go to bed I remember all the things I do each day that demonstrate my bravery. This feels good and increases my ability to act courageously. Every day I am stronger and more capable.

Think About It Thursday!

Good Morning Friends!

Today's Think about it Thursday has to do with finding your passions!


God has put perfect desires and passions inside all of us... But it can take time, soul-searching, and some life experience to identify your true passions. These questions are here to help you to tap into your wants, needs, desires, and dreams. Have fun with them and discover what you can add to your life that will fill it with delight.



As promised, I am listing the questions for you here...

Feel free to share any insights you may have come up with!

1.     What’s the one thing I’ve always wanted to do?

2.     If I could spend today doing whatever I desire, what would it be?

3.     Where do I really want to live? What city and what type of residence?

4.     Where would I like to visit?

5.     What do I talk about doing but never do?

6.     What are the reasons I don’t go after my dreams? 

7.     How will I finish the sentence, “More than anything, before I die, I want to ___________?” 

8.     What are the things in my life that I would like to get rid of? 

9.     Which people in my life inspire me and why? It’s important to know who inspires you so you can spend more time with them. 

10.  If I were to make just one radical change in my life right now to make life better, what would it be?

11.  How do I feel when I put all my effort into accomplishing one of my goals?

12.  How do I feel whenever I achieve a life goal? 

13.  What’s missing from my life? 

14.  Who are my biggest supporters? 

15.  Who or what gets in the way of me achieving my goals? 

Some of these questions may be really difficult... Take your time! Get out your journal or notebook 
and get going on some self-discovery!
